Fume extraction while welding

Fume extraction while welding

Why to apply fume extraction while welding?

Welding is a process where smoke emissions arise, and these can include health damaging elements for workers.
Therefore they are present in the breathing area of an employee, which is undesirable. The purpose of extraction and filtration equipment is for the extraction of fumes away from the welding area and therefore prevents it appearing in the employee’s breathing zone.

How to apply fume extraction while welding?

For the extraction of fumes while welding, suitable extracting devices have to be used in order to reach the maximal effect of extraction, while keeping costs as low as possible.

We commonly use extracting fans, extracting covers and plates. In special cases we use extracting blades. For the extraction of fumes while welding, individual work places are connected by a central extracting pipeline which secures extracted fumes, and it is led into the central extraction and filtration equipment, where the separation of harmful substances from extracted air particles takes place.

In summer the clean, filtered air is led into an outdoor area and in winter back into a hall area, the result being an expressive reduction of heating costs.

Choice of equipment for fume extraction while welding

Operating costs and constancy of achievement are indicators for showing if the correct extracting and filtering equipment was chosen for fume extraction while welding.

Example of incorrect choice of extraction and filtration equipment:

If there is unsuitably constructed equipment, despite its ability to automatically regenerate, the filtering media gets overfilled and the equipment requires regular, expensive clearing, as well as the regular replacement of expensive filtering media. It is not unusual for operators to employ a person or to hire a firm, which is in charge of the welding area extraction, all throughout the year (costs are hundreds of thousands crowns). The truth is that it is unnecessary for operators to pay these costs if the right equipment is chosen – unfortunately, this is not well known.

Example of correct choice of extraction and filtration equipment:

The equipment copes with the continual extracting operation all throughout the life of filtering media, which is at least 15000 – 20000 hours of business, without the necessity of cleaning. The equipment requires only an occasional visual check up.
